Pearl Legend: Hold and Win is a new release which is coming from iSoftBet, a slot machine with a Chinese concentration and utilizing a lot of the designs that are normal for their games. Some of the features included will be familiar to you, as the Hold and Win a part of the title suggests there are a few things which are unique also. You are playing on 5×3 reels with 20 paylines being used each round. Pearl Legend: Hold and Win can deliver top wins of 1,250x the stake but its standard mixes offer maximum of 500x. It has a 96% RTP, while for its huge features there will be Wilds, Pearl scatters, the Pearl Legend Respins, Reel Boosters and regular game modifiers.Betting and Prizes 20 coins are being used and you simply pick their value, in a range of $0.01 to $1. The wagering range coming from this will go from $0.20 to $20.Wins of up to 1,250x the stake can be paid during Respins, which implies that you could leave with $25,000 cash, by utilizing the most extreme wager of $20. Standard wins of up to 500x the stake per spin are delivered during gameplay, utilizing mixes made out of Gold Dragons.A 96% RTP reveals to us that the amount getting back into the pockets of its players is about the same in other slot games.Pearl Legend: Hold and Win Slot Features Anytime you see the Yin Yang image on the reels, it will be joined by the Wild logo, so it will be the substitute which you can use to place along with standard images and get new wins. You can’t have it do likewise for the scatter but that is a standard limitation. There are a few game modifiers which you may use during paid spins. Red Gems will give you 3 to 5 wilds on the reels. Blue Gems will change images into Pearl scatters. There is likewise a Dragon sculpture, which will change Royals to high value images. The Pearls are your scatters and landing at least 5 out of a single spin will take you to the Pearl Legend Respins reward. Both the setting off Pearls and any new ones that go along, will get sticky on the reels. You start with 3 respins but you reset the number on the off chance that you get extra Pearls before the rounds are totally consumed.Pearls may appear during Respins and they can bring certain Boosters, given that you get three that match.Blue Gems: will open up to three extra rows (Reels Boosted).Green Gems: give the Pearl prizes a boost (Values Boosted).Red Gems: gives you 1 extra respin (Spins+ Boosted).Purple Gems: the multiplier goes up as high as 10x (Multiplier Boosted).Theme and Design As far as Chinese themes go, the one from Pearl Legend looks standard. The six images we see are basic in such games, as we’re taking a look at Yin Yang signs for the wilds, a Pearl as scatter alongside premium images with the Dragon, Phoenix Bird, 3 Gold Coins, Frog. The other four base paying images are the ones showing Royals. With everything taken into account, it’s a standard look for such slots. The activity seems, by all accounts, to be put placed in a temple, where we see on the left side a living Dragon holding a pearl in its claws.ConclusionPearl Legend: Hold and Win is definitely not a terrible slot machine, especially as they changed a few things about its major feature, they didn’t just clone the same reward game that every other person is using lately.

The British Boxing Board of Control’s Robert Smith talks to Matt Christie following yet another controversial night in a British ring
There have been suggestions that Josh Warrington should have been pulled out sooner. What was your perception of the main event from your position at ringside?
I’m sitting six metres back behind a perspex screen. The people closer are the judges and the referee. I spoke to Howard [Foster, the referee] after the bout. In all but name, Josh Warrington was a world champion. Although he was hurt, Howard tells me Josh’s eyes were clear and, when asked, he said, ‘I’m alright, Howard.’ So he addressed the referee by his name. So Howard let it continue.
You will notice that a couple of times, Howard was concerned about Josh’s jaw so he’s gone to have a look in the corner and Josh was readily talking. Also, during the bout – after the fourth – Josh was talking to his opponent. So Howard felt that he should be given the benefit of the doubt and be allowed to continue.
I actually thought Josh was clawing his way back into it. So with all that in mind – Howard’s experience, that Josh’s eyes were clear, he was talking and he was fighting back plus the fact that Josh was a world champion, it was an important fight, his qualities are well known and other people have come back from similar situations to win – Howard made the call to let the fight continue.
With that in mind, that Howard knows Josh as a fighter and made a decision because of that, would the same chances have been given to Lara if he’d have been in similar trouble?
People are assuming things. The first priority of the referee is the safety of the boxer. Once he’s decided that he can continue then other factors may come in. How is he recovering? He knows Josh has an experienced corner – now that’s not shifting responsibility, it’s a fact that has to be taken into consideration. And I would hope that if Lara had been in the same position, if he had responded in the same way, the fight would have continued also.
Were you uncomfortable at any point watching the fight develop?
First of all, what took everyone by surprise, was the shock of what was happening; I was shocked that Josh went over as he did. It was a good shot and he was obviously hurt. His legs were stiff and you could see he was not his normal self but he’d just been hit with a very good shot.
But yes, I am always concerned if anybody is in that position.
Will Howard have to face any hearing?
It’s too early to say. I’ve spoken to him but I am awaiting reports to come in regarding the whole tournament. But from initial discussions, he acted in the proper way. To my mind he’s a world class official and people will say he got it wrong, people will say he gave the boy the benefit of the doubt. There are numerous examples of fighters being given the benefit of the doubt and going on to win the fight.
What was your reaction to the scores in the Zelfa Barrett-Kiko Martinez fight?
I can tell you this: The closest people to the action are the judges and the referee. I am six metres back and I had Barrett winning by a couple of rounds. Two metres behind me is the promoters. Now, when I spoke to Eddie Hearn, he thought that Barrett had nicked it by a round. The commentary teams are significantly further back – they’re in a box – and they had it a draw. Further back still, at an angle, you’ve got the pundits like Johnny Nelson and Adam Booth. So the further you went back the more the perception of the result changes.
My own opinion was that Martinez was full of industry but a lot of the punches, his hooks and swings, were landing on the gloves whereas Barrett was landing the cleaner shots. Now people can interpret that in many ways.
You had two judges who had exactly the same score (118-111). Now I’m not defending anyone but that’s a fact. So you look closer and the judges only agreed on five of the 12 rounds. In the remaining seven, there were three rounds where one judge scored it even and there was a further two rounds where there was a complete split – one went for the red corner, one went for the blue corner and another judge called it even. That indicates to me that they were close rounds.
With the current system, a close round can be 10-9 and a wide round can be 10-9 and maybe that’s where something needs to be changed. That’s where we get the difference of opinion.
In your position, can you trigger a change of thinking in regard to the scoring?
The whole world needs to change. I have stood up at sanctioning body conventions and said we need to consider making a wide round 10-8 and a round where a knockdown is scored, 10-7. But just because there’s a knockdown doesn’t make it 10-8 now if it’s a flash knockdown. It’s down to interpretation but I do believe there is value in looking at the system.
What is your opinion on open scoring?
We don’t permit it here because there could be a crowd reaction. I also think you could get a situation where a fighter is so far ahead they just get on their bike and run which would take away the endeavour.
I quite like that you don’t know the result until the end. We’re not like football or rugby where you get points or goals on the board. We are the only sport where you don’t know the result until the end.
I do think that half the problem is that someone gets a feeling that someone has won it and they haven’t. I think on Saturday, because of his endeavour, a lot of people thought that Martinez won when I don’t believe he did win.
There is clearly an issue in the viewers’ perception so frequently differing from the actual result. It can be wildly different and that is also different to any other sport.
I understand that. But from your position at home you can be swayed by the commentary.
Is there more that the Board of Control can do, in the face of accusations of incompetence and even worse, in terms of how you react to the controversial decisions?
We get the reports, we read the reports and if we’re concerned about anyone’s performance we act upon it. I do think that the current time period without crowds, where the majority of people who are voicing their opinion aren’t in the crowd or aren’t at ringside, has something to do with this. Again, those who are in the arena have different views. Some are one metre away, others are 100 metres away. Some can see replays, some can’t. There are lots of factors why people are disagreeing with results but that doesn’t mean it’s crooked or people are incompetent.
I do respect the opinion of everyone but that doesn’t mean that they’re right. I thought Barrett won by two rounds and I accept that people will disagree with that.
What was your reaction to Eddie Hearn saying that it will be difficult to get fighters to the UK because of the ongoing controversy?
Of course it hurts. I don’t think it’s helpful that people are saying that but I do understand why people are saying that. It all stems back to how the fight is scored. You can have a 12-rounder that’s a rip-roarer and someone wins every round by 10-9 and it then looks on paper like it’s been a whitewash when it hasn’t been a whitewash. That’s where the problem lies.
Are the judges encouraged, if a round is close, to score it one way or the other rather than scoring it even?
Yes. I say to people they need to find a winner from each round.
Does that not create a problem when the best solution to scoring a round that’s close is to score it level?
I’m not going to argue with that but I do feel, in the space of three minutes, you can generally find a winner. I’m not saying they HAVE to find a winner in every round. A lot of the time we can forget what happened in the first minute of the round, or in the first half of the fight. You know as well as I do that you can watch a fight at ringside, then go back and watch on TV and it looks like a completely different fight.
These are not crooked decisions. But I do believe there are flaws in the system that affect how the fights are scored that can be looked at. The key is to ensure everyone in the world looks as well because it’s imperative that all judges score the same way.

The start of the Champions League features an intriguing matchup between La Liga’s Barcelona and Ligue 1’s Paris Saint-Germain.
Both teams feature among the best strikers in the sport: Lionel Messi is second in La Liga with 15 goals this season, while PSG’s Kylian Mbappe ranks first in Ligue 1 with 16. Whoever performs better on Tuesday could set their club up for success in the first leg of the Round of 16.
But soccer is a team sport, and it will take more than Messi and Mbappe to secure victory in Tuesday’s match. In that sense, Barcelona may be playing the best it has all season, taking a seven-game La Liga win streak into its match vs. PSG; it has also won three of its last four games in the Copa Del Rey, though it did lose its last match to Sevilla on Wednesday.PSG is playing inspired recently as well, taking a three-game Ligue 1 win streak into its match vs. Barcelona, as well as wins in the Coupe de France and Trophee des Champions. Here’s everything you need to know about the opening match of the Champions League, including time, TV channel, streaming info and more:MORE: Watch Barcelona vs. PSG live with fuboTV (7-day free trial)What channel is Barcelona vs. PSG on today?Cable subscribers can watch Barcelona vs. PSG on CBS Sports Network or on the streaming service CBS All Access (which will soon rebrand as Paramount+). Tyrant King Megaways plays on 6 reels, gets as many as 117,649 Megaways during regular spins, however then it likewise gets up to 200,704 different ways on the off chance that you get to its free spins. Besides the free spins, there will be Cascading reels, expanding multipliers, wilds and respins. Payouts can be very acceptable, going to 10,000x the stake, while RTP is OK at 96%.Betting and Prizes $0.20 is a low bet, that most players can make use of it and it’s the lowest amount that Tyrant King Megaways permits. At the other end, the highest wagers used is up to $20.Winning big is consistently a chance in slots which depend on Megaways and it is a significant motivation behind why these games turned out to be so popular. It is not easy however, since the unpredictability is also on the high side. All things considered, a bonanza of up to 10,000x the stake is onThe RTP is set at 96%.Tyrant King Megaways Slot Features Concerning the Megaways system. It depends on a fixed number of reels, 6 for this case but on a random number of images for every one (2 to 7 during regular spins). This permits up to 117,649 different ways to win during your regular spins. After a combination forms, cascading reels will trigger, eliminating winning images and adding others in. This can prompt more wins and cascades.Get at least 4 wilds to show up in one spin and the Respins feature triggers. It will give you a Hold and Win style reward with 3 respins offered, during which you need to get extra wilds on the reels. Just wilds and empty positions can show up in this mode. You gather the setting off wilds and any new ones that may appear. In the event that a reel is covered by them, it transforms into a multiplier wild. The respins reset when you get new wilds.Toward the end of the feature, you get every one of those wilds used as a component of new mixes in the base game. Every combo of up to 6 wilds will settle up to 50x the stake. There will be free spins to go after also, up to 15 rounds offered when up to 6 scattered Dinosaur Eggs show up in view. The game area increases, with one extra line of images, so now you can have 200,704 different ways to win active. Another feature will include an expanding multiplier, going up by 1x after each new cascade.Theme and Design We are going back to the period when the dinosaurs roamed and controlled this planet. The T-Rex will be the star, as a wild while Dinosaur Eggs are represent scatters. Standard images include an unlikely picture of an Adventurer, a Cavewoman, three kinds of dinosaurs and the 10 to A Royals. It is a mix of prehistoric and modern at that point, which reminds me of Jurassic Park because you can’t get such a thing elsewhere.ConclusionTyrant King Megaways looks engaging, giving us some new features to try out, along with the ones we already knew and enjoyed. Top wins of 10,000x the stake are not extraordinary in a Megaways slot but rather they look great all things being equal.

As we prepare for another roller coaster off-season with the Minnesota Vikings, we are once again feeling the usual hope and optimism. With the draft around the corner, many fans and experts have their own ideas of what Vikings will do come April. Do you take the best available player, or do you draft for need? Or will Rick once again trade back and recoup some lost picks? Either way, it seems like for the first time in a while the Minnesota Vikings are in a unique position. Over the last few years, so many game-changers were selected in the 8-15 range. You can go offense or defense and get a guy that fits right in to make an instant impact.
For the first time in the Mike Zimmer era, it was the offense that carried this team and put us on the brink of a playoff spot even with a 1-5 start. So, assuming that continues with some new additions upfront, you would be right to believe the Vikings are going to be a strong contender next season. As always, the biggest challenge that new OC Klint Kubiak will have to figure out is how to protect Kirk Cousins and allow him to really take over in games.
Addressing our biggest issue!
Common sense would suggest the Vikings take the highest-ranked offensive lineman. Kirk Cousins was the 3rd most pressured quarterback in the league last season (38.6%) but still managed to finish in the top 10 in passer rating (105.0). The Vikings have done reasonably well over the last 2 years taking an offensive lineman in the 2nd round of those drafts and they have both worked out quite well, but we don’t have a pick in the 2nd round this year so maybe this is the year we address that position we so desperately need to improve on to allow our offense to be even more explosive next year.
Another option, however, is building our offensive line through free agency. The name that jumps up at you is Trent Williams, who the Vikings tried to acquire last year but he refused. The free agency pool seems to be filled with quite a few really solid offensive linemen that could instantly make our team better and would need no introduction to the league. A perfect example of a veteran lineman going to a team and making a huge impact is Andrew Whitworth going to the Los Angeles Rams and solidifying that line in the run and most importantly protecting the quarterback’s blindside. Paying for an established player in that position is one of the few roster moves that are very low risk and tend to work out more than often.
The most unlikely scenario would be to trade for one of the available players in that position. This wouldn’t be such a bad idea considering the nature of the position. Offensive linemen tend to play till much later in terms of age compared to most other positions. Ravens are said to be looking for a 1st round pick from anyone interested in Orlando Brown Jr who had a tremendous season at left tackle. The Vikings should strongly consider this as an option, Brown is 23 years old and will shore up that position for at least the next 8 years. A 1st round pick is a small compensation to pay for a player that would be a massive part of your offense for a decade.
The Other Side of the Ball
The Vikings’ strong point for the entirety of Mike Zimmer’s tenure as the head coach has been defense. That was not the case last season, the Vikings ranked 30th overall, our pass rush was non-existent (28th in sacks) and what was even more alarming was how easily teams were able to run the ball at will. Injuries happen all over the NFL but to have so many starters and their replacements out injured took a massive toll on the team. One thing that Vikings fans can be certain of is that there will be no repeat of this and we can be sure that our defense will be back to its usual self.
Not only do the Vikings have a lot to look forward to with players coming back from injury, but the young cornerbacks also really came into their own as the season progressed. Cameron Dantzler was the highest-graded cornerback since week 7.
Expectations or False Hope?
There is plenty to look forward to if you’re a Vikings fan, if we can somehow manage to put it all together, we can build something special. This offseason we have a very rare opportunity where if we play our cards right we can certainly put our names firmly in the mix for the NFC.

Few rookies have captured the nation’s attention quite like Ken Griffey Jr., the lefty with the sweet swing, huge smile and incredible all-around talent when he was a 19-year-old kid playing in the majors. Instead of giving you just one Junior Griffey story, we’re going to give you a glimpse at how a weekly publication like TSN covered a phenom like Griffey in the world before social media.
Every issue of TSN included hundreds of little notes on players and teams, in every sport. There were plenty of features and in-depth stories, of course, but lots of the pages read like a compilation of Twitter-size news bytes. With his dad already a TSN regular, Junior had name recognition and the talent that intoxicated the baseball-loving country. We’ll start with the first mention we could find of Junior and go all the way up to his first (of many) TSN cover — which came out right when he made his MLB debut. And then, for fun, we’ll add one entertaining tidbit from his rookie season.
TSN ARCHIVES: TSN introduces Joe DiMaggio to America♦♦♦♦♦June 8, 1987The first mention of Ken Griffey’s son in the pages of The Sporting News magazine was actually in the team notes section. In the team notes for the Pirates, written by Bob Hertzel. Scouting director Elmer Gray was responsible for Cincinnati drafting Ken Griffey when he was with the Reds. The Pirates hold the second pick in June’s amateur draft, and Gray could have a hand in the drafting of Ken Griffey Jr.♦♦♦♦♦June 15, 1987On the left side of Page 2, the table of contents, is the first picture of a smiling Ken Griffey Jr., to grace the pages of TSN. Junior’s wearing a Braves uniform and cap; the picture was taken before the draft in the Atlanta dugout, where his dad was playing in 1987. The story of the MLB Draft results — mostly about Griffey Jr. — is on Page 22. Here’s an excerpt, from the article written by Seattle-based contributor Jim Street.Griffey kept the comparisons within the family, saying he saw himself as a copy of his father. “We do basically everything the same,” he said. “We hit, run and throw the same.”But Ken Griffey Sr. disagreed. “To me, he’s got more power than I will ever have. He’s a lot better than I was at the same age.”As a senior at Moeller this season, Griffey batted .478 with seven home runs and 28 RBIs in 24 games. He was 13 for 13 in stolen bases. “I can’t compare him to other players around the country because I haven’t seen them,” said Moeller coach Mike Cameron. “But he’s the finest, ability-wise, I’ve seen in 20 years.”Among the current major leaguers Cameron coached are Barry Larkin and Buddy Bell of the Reds. ♦♦♦♦♦June 22, 1987Longtime TSN staffer Stan Isle wrote a weekly notes column in the magazine for more than a decade, and he led off his column this week talking about Griffey Jr. At age 17, Ken Griffey Jr. signs a $150,000 contract with the Mariners as the No. 1 selection in major league baseball’s amateur draft. Contrast that with the circumstances 18 years ago, when Ken Griffey Sr. — now an Atlanta Braves outfielder in his 15th major league season — signed his first professional contract with Cincinnati. As the elder Griffey recalled, Cincinnati game him “a jock strap, a pair of sanitary hose and a Reds warmup jacket” before dispatching him to Bradenton (Gulf Coast) with a contract that called for $500 a month. He was selected in the 29th round of the 1969 draft, perhaps the 700th player chosen. Young Griffey is a power-hitting outfielder like his father and a heralded product of Cincinnati’s Moeller High School. “He runs like I did when I was chasing his mother,” said the proud father. Griffey has reported to Seattle’s rookie league team at Bellingham (Northwest), where he can look forward to bus trips into Oregon and Idaho. “If he has any problems,” said Ken Sr., “he can give me a call. I’ll call him every day, too, to make sure he’s alright.”♦♦♦♦♦Aug.10, 1987Griffey items, such as this one on Bob McCoy’s “Keeping Score” page, quickly became regulars in pretty much every issue. Ken Griffey Jr., the No. 1 pick in the June free-agent draft, on life with the Seattle Mariners’ farm club in Bellingham, Wash., in his first summer away from his Cincinnati home: “I kept thinking about things I’d be doing back at home, you know, running around the house with my brother, being at the pool, just things like that. I got real down … I didn’t know what to do. All I knew is I wanted to go back.”♦♦♦♦♦Sept. 7, 1987Of course the Mariners entry on the “Around the Minors” page is about Griffey. Bellingham outfielder Ken Griffey Jr., the first player selected in this summer’s draft, was batting .301 on August 25 and was tied for the Northwest League lead in home runs (13). “He started out very, very slowly,” manager Rick Sweet said. “Basically, he was overmatched. But now he’s one of the better hitters in the league.” Sweet predicted that Griffey, 17, would be in the majors by the time he is 21 or 22.♦♦♦♦♦Sept. 21, 1987In the era before social media, the “Voice of the Fan” letters page was a big deal. It was a way to have your opinion broadcast to the entire nation. This fan, Eddie Cannon Jr., of Owensboro, Ky., has an issue with the “phony” NCAA system. The more things change, eh? Eddie’s letter to TSN:I am tired of hearing everyone from congressmen to college coaches wanting to protect the amateur athlete. First of all, they don’t need to be protected from anyone but themselves. They are the ones who accept the money. They want the money. In baseball, the players who want the money sign a minor-league contract and play. The players who cheat are the ones using the college system. They want to refine their athletic skills for the pros and college is the only place for them to do so.It’s funny how everyone made such a big deal when Herschel Walker left Georgia after his junior year, but when Ken Griffey Jr. signed a contract out of high school no one was complaining that he was going to miss out on a college education. What’s really needed is an honest farm system for the NFL and NCAA, not the phony system that now exists in the colleges.♦♦♦♦♦March 21, 1988From Stan Isle’s notes column again. Seriously, TSN was Twitter before Twitter. Think of the RTs this anecdote would have generated.Outfielder Ken Griffey Jr., behind the wheel of the Mercedes he bought after receiving a reported $175,000 signing bonus from the Mariners last summer, drove all around Tempe, Ariz., trying to find the Seattle club’s spring training hotel. In exasperation, Griffey swung into a parking lot and used his auto phone to call Bob Porter, the Mariners’ public relations director. Griffey listened intently, jotted down Porter’s directions and started his engine. He drove about 100 feet before he looked up and realized he had called Porter from the lot at the Mariners’ hotel ♦♦♦♦♦April 25, 1988Senior was playing for the Braves to start the 1988 season, which meant the Braves team notes were a great place for this Junior tidbit:Ken Griffey Jr. had two homers in his first three games with San Bernardino, Seattle’s California League affiliate. His father had only two hits in his first 17 at-bats with the Braves. “I’ve got to get some of those bats Junior is using,” the father said. Griffey, who turned 38 during the first week of the season, still hopes to play at least one game in the majors at the same time as his son. ♦♦♦♦♦May 25, 1988Yep, the Griffey Jr. excitement was real, folks. Ken Griffey Jr. is so popular in San Bernardino (California) that a Ken Griffey Poster Night promotion May 6 was a sellout. On May 17, Griffey and two teammates addressed 2,500 sixth-graders in the “Safe at home, not out on drugs” program. ♦♦♦♦♦July 4, 1988Ugh. Bad news, in the “Around the Minors” page. Outfielder Ken Griffey Jr., the first player selected in last year’s draft, probably will miss the rest of the season because of a stress fracture in a vertebra. He was batting .338 and had 11 homers, 42 RBIs and 32 stolen bases for San Bernardino (California) when he injured himself diving for a ball June 9. ♦♦♦♦♦Aug. 8, 1988More bad news for the Griffey duo. For a couple of months now, pretty much every Braves team note talked about Senior’s struggles and the Braves’ attempts to trade him. Eventually he was released, promoting this note in Moss Klein’s “A.L. Beat” page.
For Seinfeld fans … the Ken Phelps-for-Jay Buhner (and his rocket for an arm) trade might not have happened if the Yankees had just waited a couple of days to get Ken Griffey. We would have been robbed of a classic sitcom quote. pic.twitter.com/nQ5xvYkQZt
— Ryan Fagan (@ryanfagan) August 6, 2018♦♦♦♦♦Aug. 29, 1988He’s back! The injury wasn’t as bad as first thought. From the Around the Minors page.Ken Griffey Jr., in his first appearance since being sidelined for two months with a stress fracture in a vertebra, went 2 for 4, scored a run, stole a base and had one RBI as Vermont (Eastern) lost to Williamsport, 4-3. ♦♦♦♦♦March 6, 1989Neither Griffey had a great start to spring. In the Reds team note, it was mentioned that Senior was hit in the chin by a ball that glanced off a protective screen near first base. And then this, from the Mariners team note. Ken Griffey Jr. was a first-day casualty when a thrown ball hit his glove and then slammed into his right eye. The eye was swollen shut. ♦♦♦♦♦March 27, 1989Junior is still just 19, but it’s become obvious during the spring that his arrival in the majors will be sooner than later. A short stand-alone story written by Jim Street on Page 28 is headlined “A Father-Son ‘First’ For the Griffeys?” An excerpt:Ken Griffey Jr. is making a serious bid to become the youngest player in the major leagues this season. The Seattle Mariners’ 19-year-old center fielder, drafted No. 1 in the country in 1987 out of Moeller High School in Cincinnati, went to spring training as a non-roster invitee. But after 12 Cactus League games, he was batting .429 (15 for 35) with one home run, two triples, two doubles and a team-high 12 runs batted in. “He can run, he can hit, he can throw and he can make things happen,” said M’s pitching ace Mark Langston. “I don’t care if he’s 19 or whatever, this guy can make the club and help us.” ♦♦♦♦♦
(Sporting News cover)
April 10, 1989The Griffeys make the cover of The Sporting News. The cover story, written by Griffey regular Jim Street, is on Page 12. The headline screams “Clock Strikes Griffey Time.” An excerpt … Griffey rushed himself into the picture, and the outlook for the Mariners changed almost overnight. In his spring-training prospectus, (manager Jim) Lefebvre didn’t even mention Griffey’s name among those battling for outfield positions.By the time the Cactus League schedule began, Griffey’s status already was on the rise. And there was no stopping him. Lefebvre had decided to play the youngster almost every game. “I want to take a good look at him,” he said. “We’ll see how it goes.”It went better than anyone expected. Even Griffey. “I didn’t expect to be playing this well,” he said when he was midway through a 15-game hitting streak that was the longest in Mariners’ history for spring training. And when the Cactus League pitching got better, so did Griffey’s hitting. Skeptics were waiting for him to be overmatched, but he went through a three-week stretch in which he never went more than four at-bats without a hit.♦♦♦♦♦April 10, 1989Legendary Dayton sportswriter Hal McCoy was a TSN regular, and he crushed his story on what it was like for Ken Griffey, member of the famed Big Red Machine and now back with the Reds, to become Griffey Senior in the blink of an eye. An excerpt:As a Grapefruit League game was in progress at the Reds’ spring training facility in Plant City, Fla., Griffey and fellow outfielders Paul O’Neill, Eric Davis and Kal Daniels sweated throuhgh 50-yard wind sprints along the outfield warning track. O’Neill, Davis and Daniels completed their work, but Griffey plodded on, perspiration dripping off his chin in the 80-degree heat. When Griffey finished, Davis leaned against a bullpen chain link fence and asked Griffey, “Hey, ol’ man, need some air? If you do, I’ll go to the clubhouse and fetch some.”Griffey walked slowly to the clubhouse and equipment manager Bernie Stows greeted him with, “Hi, Senior.” Griffey feigned anger and Stowe said, “I could have called you senior citizen.”Cincinnati restaurateur Jeff Ruby, who was in the clubhouse, added his comments, saying, “It’s the Other Griffey.”The elder Griffey quickly corrected Ruby, saying, “I’m the Original Griffey.”♦♦♦♦♦May 29, 1989With all of 14 MLB games under his belt, Griffey Jr. rattled off a stretch of eight hits in eight consecutive at-bats (with a couple of walks mixed in), and he batted .625 in the final week of April, his first month in the bigs. That stretch was covered in a short article by Jim Street in the May 15 issue. So, yes, the hype jumped up a notch. Another Street short, titled “Griffey Bars Gobbled Up” told the story.SEATTLE — Demand for the Ken Griffey Jr. Milk Chocolate Bar far exceeds the supply and shows no signs of letting up. “It has gotten out of hand,” said Mike Cramer of Pacific Trading Cards Inc. of Edmonds, Wash., two days after the candy bars became available. “I had no idea the demand would be this phenomenal. We have more orders than we have bars being made.”MORE: 10 times Ken Griffey Jr. invaded pop culture in the ’90sThe 13-ounce candy bars resemble chocolate baseball cards, with wrappers showing the Seattle Mariners’ rookie center fielder at bat. The sale of the 95-cent bars began May 17, but some stores had been sold out before the candy even reached the shelves.“We had been taking phone orders for about two weeks before they actually were available,” one store manager said. “Out first shipments were sold out before they got here.”Cramer said his company was working two shifts and producing about 12,000 bars a day. He initially had planned to test market 2,500.“We weren’t ready for this,” he said. “I swear to God, we have to crank them out like Hershey bars.”
He said only local orders were being filled and he was not sure if the bars would be available nationally.“I have a large order from Cincinnati (Griffey’s father plays for the Reds), but I don’t know when, or if, I will get them out,” Cramer said. “At some point we may say, ‘We’re done’ and shut it down.“We’ll produce them until we get tired. I’d say we’ll do this another three or four weeks. But the time we’re done with this, we’ll have had our fill of chocolate. The crew is dragging and I am dragging right along with them.”
